Drilling rig sinks in Gulf of Suez, killings, missing crews are reported
The rig, named Adam Marine 12, capsized Tuesday evening in the Mount Oil area of the Red Sea, approximately 300 kilometers south of the Suez Canal, the ministry said, referencing the Offshore Shukheir Oil Company (OSOCO).
At the time of the accident, the vessel was conducting drilling operations within a concession owned by offshore drilling firm ADES. Industry sources indicated that OSOCO had been tasked with drilling several wells on the barge, which was in the process of moving to a new location.
Authorities confirmed that they are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with specialized agencies and regional partners to manage the response.
The Red Sea and Suez Canal, a critical maritime route linking Europe and Asia, have faced increased instability since late 2023, when the Yemen-based Houthi group began attacking tankers and commercial ships passing through, disrupting maritime traffic.
The Suez Canal plays a vital role in global trade, with data from Kpler showing that about 10-12% of the world’s crude oil exports and 14-15% of oil product exports like gasoline and diesel pass through the Red Sea.
